Pacific Islands Declare 'Climate Crisis' That Calls for the End of Fossil Fuels
The Pacific Islands are ground-zero for climate change. By 2050, many of the low-lying atolls that make up the region could be uninhabitable. Leaders of these islands, including Fiji and the Solomon Islands, recognize the dangers climate change from sea level rise to extreme weather. Read more hereFiji and the Solomon Islands are part of the Pacific islands that are facing the threats of climate change. It is said that many of the islands would not be fit for habitation by 2050. In the recent Fifth Pacific Islands Development Forum Leaders’ Summit, the island's officials made a special “climate crisis” declaration, citing a need for urgent action in phasing out coal and other fossil fuels. The region has been feeling the impacts of climate change by the rising sea level, threatening to erode and swallow many low-lying islands. The health of the residents is also at risk since respiratory disease, chronic diarrhea, malnutrition, and infectious disease all grow in a warmer, more unstable climate which is evident in the Pacific Islands.
Sydney Harbour Bridge in Sydney Australia
Sydney Harbour Bridge is a steel arch bridge across Sydney Harbour in Port Jackson, Australia. The deep waters of Sydney Harbour rendered temporary support impractical, so the steel arch was assembled by building out from each bank. The two sides met in the middle in 1930, and the bridge was officially opened with an elaborate ceremony on March 19, 1932. It serves as the primary transportation link between Sydney and its suburbs on the northern side of the harbour. It spans about 500 metres (1,650 feet), making it one of the longest steel arch bridges in the world. Along its length, it features four railroad tracks, a highway, and two pedestrian walkways.
